Michael Gove recently stated that he expected Academy Status to be the ‘norm’ for secondary schools. The fact that around one third of all secondary schools in England are now either open academies or in the latter stages of their conversion, suggests that this will soon be the case. Indeed, it is now estimated that almost 70% of secondary schools in England will be open academies by September 2012. Many primary schools are also moving towards greater independence, via academy status, although the pace of conversion in this sector is understandably slower owing to resource requirements.
